A violent rampage took place at Vidyasagar State General Hospital in Behala on Friday night following the death of 28-year-old Mehebub Alam, a heart attack patient from Thakurpukur. Alam was admitted to the hospital around 6:30 PM and, after several hours of treatment, was declared dead by doctors around 9:00 PM. His family, upset by the outcome, engaged in a heated argument with hospital authorities while the death certificate was being issued. This escalated into a violent outburst by the family and others present at the hospital.
At around 10:30 PM, a mob of several hundred individuals began vandalizing the hospital, first attacking the visiting gate. They then stormed into the emergency department, causing extensive damage for over an hour. Furniture including chairs and tables was smashed, and medicines and injections stored in the hospital's storeroom were thrown on the floor. The mob also reportedly damaged equipment in the hospital, leaving the area in disarray. The rampage affected the hospital's emergency and observation wards, which had to be temporarily cleared due to the chaos.
During the attack, three nurses who were on duty were assaulted. One of the nurses was allegedly dragged into a bathroom and beaten, while another suffered injuries from the mob. Their clothing was also reportedly torn during the altercation. The injured nurses are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries. The incident triggered panic, and many patients, along with their family members, fled the hospital for safety. Several women were seen entering the male observation ward, further escalating the situation.
Despite the presence of hospital security, the rampage continued for nearly two hours, as security personnel struggled to control the situation. After the violence subsided, the family members of the deceased reportedly abandoned Alam's body in an ambulance before fleeing the scene. A large police force from Parnashree Police Station arrived at the hospital, and police sources confirmed the arrest of nine individuals in connection with the incident. Among those arrested are several women. Police are continuing to investigate the matter and are working to identify and apprehend others involved in the attack.
